KPS is a representative institution for psychoanalytic research and training in South Korea. It has accumulated over 20 years of tradition and experience since establishing the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist Training Program in 2000. This program is the first systematic and standardized program for training psychoanalytic psychotherapists in the country, exclusively for "psychiatrists."
As the need for psychotherapy increases, more patients seek treatment for interpersonal problems, inner feelings of depression and emptiness, self-esteem and self-love issues, and other difficulties that do not respond well to medication. These individuals want to communicate their inner pain and emotional challenges with others.
The Advanced Course in Depth Psychotherapy aims to help trainees grow their identities and abilities as therapists who can help these patients in clinical settings. Trainees will become familiar with psychoanalytic theory and learn and develop clinical techniques.
The program is designed to provide a deeper understanding of psychoanalytic theory and how to apply it to clinical practice. Trainees will also have the opportunity to learn practical skills in dealing with psychological difficulties and personal experience in dealing with mental pain and suffering, which will enhance their understanding and morality.
Through this program, the Korean Association of Psychoanalysis equips professionals with higher knowledge and skills in depth psychotherapy, enabling them to provide better treatment and support in the domestic mental health field.
The training program is a 2-year course where trainees will learn in-depth and intensive theoretical and practical knowledge on psychoanalytic psychotherapy and clinical techniques based on a systematic and practical psychoanalytic psychotherapy curriculum spanning 114 hours. During each session, trainees will discuss actual cases and build practical understanding and experience to develop their clinical techniques.
Trainees will be able to attend seminars by renowned analysts overseas 1-2 times a month to learn and experience the international trends in psychoanalysis. They will listen to modern and practical lectures and case analyses with interpretation, and these learning opportunities will provide broad stimulation and help trainees' clinical abilities.
Those who meet the two-year course's completion and graduation requirements of the two years will be awarded a certificate and diploma from the Korean Association of Psychoanalysis, certifying their completion of the Advanced Course in Depth Psychotherapy. Only those who complete and graduate from this course can apply for full Korean Association of Psychoanalysis membership.
Except for the self-psychology class, each class is co-taught by two instructors who share various theories and clinical experiences. This gives trainees a wide range of learning opportunities and an integrated perspective.
The faculty comprises around 20 distinguished instructors actively engaged as psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychotherapists, philosophers, researchers, and authors. Trainees can systematically learn and experience these instructors' theories and practical aspects of depth psychotherapy.
Lectures are generally held from September to June of the following year on Saturdays from 15:30 to 18:30, usually twice or thrice a month (every other week). The course is offered in both face-to-face and online formats, with online classes conducted via Zoom meetings.
